Accept a payment with Tap to Pay on iPhone
Find the Invoice, tap Take a payment, and hold the card near the top of your iPhone.
Before you start
Take a payment lists your Clients with open Invoices, newest first, and searches by Client or Invoice number. What you are charging is always a particular Invoice — the amount comes from what that Invoice still owes, read from Stripe at the moment you ask rather than from what was on screen a minute ago.
If the balance differs from the Invoice’s face value — a credit note, an earlier part-payment — the screen says so before you show it to anybody.
Steps
- Open Take a payment, or open the Invoice and tap Take a payment on it.
- Find the Client, then the Invoice. Check the amount.
- Hold the customer’s card, iPhone or Apple Watch near the top of your iPhone. Apple’s payment screen takes over.
- If the card asks for a PIN, hand the iPhone to the customer to enter it. That screen has its own accessibility options, which the customer can turn on themselves.
- Keep the card in place until the screen says the card has been read.
- Read the result. Approved is recorded against the Invoice and Stripe emails the receipt.
Good to know
Do not ask for a second tap until the screen says the first read finished. It will not double-charge — but it does restart the read, which is slower than waiting.
A declined card can be tried again, or the customer can use a different card or a digital wallet. Some cards cannot complete a contactless transaction that needs a PIN; if that happens, ask whether they have another contactless card or a wallet, and carry on with Tap to Pay on iPhone.
If the card was charged and Pippin could not record it, Pippin says exactly that and shows you the payment’s reference. The money moved; only the bookkeeping is outstanding, and attaching it again is safe — the server ignores a charge the Invoice already carries. Never take a second payment on the strength of an interrupted one.
If Pippin is closed before you see the result, the outcome arrives as a notification.
