What Tap to Pay on iPhone is
Accept contactless cards, Apple Pay and other digital wallets on the iPhone you already carry. No terminal, no card reader, nothing to plug in.
Before you start
With Tap to Pay on iPhone and Pippin, you can accept all types of in-person, contactless payments right on your iPhone — from physical debit and credit cards to Apple Pay and other digital wallets — no extra terminals or hardware needed.
The customer holds their card, iPhone or Apple Watch near the top of your iPhone. You never handle the card, and the card number is never shown to you or kept on the device.
A tap is a Stripe payment. It takes the same path every other card payment takes: Stripe charges it, Stripe records it, and the fee is booked the same way. Pippin’s job is to say which Invoice it belongs to. That means a tap reconciles exactly like a card payment taken online, because it is one.
A tap charges what the Invoice still owes, not its face value. A credit note or an earlier part-payment moves those apart, and charging the total would simply be refused.
Steps
- An Owner turns it on for the Org once, by accepting Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone Terms and Conditions. See Turn on Tap to Pay on iPhone.
- After that, find the Invoice and tap Take a payment.
- Hold the customer’s card near the top of your iPhone.
- The payment is recorded against the Invoice, and Stripe emails the receipt.
Good to know
“Tap to Pay on iPhone” is the full name of the feature and the only way Pippin refers to it — never “Tap to Pay”, never with “Apple” in front.
